Project: “Faster iPhone 3G on iOS 4” [update]

After the update on iOS 4, I realise that my two year old iPhone 3G is a bit sluggish. Furthermore, sometimes on common tasks like listening to iPod and surfing the web or emailing etc, was a pain in the ass!

So I did my online re-search to find a solution. I would like to share you my actions.

  1. Disable the Spotlight: I’ve never used Spotlight on iPhone, so it’s almost useless for me and the ram for indexing is most needed than ever. Go to “Settings -> General -> Home Button -> Spotlight” and uncheck them all.
  2. Encode your high bit rate songs to AAC through iTunes. That will make you gain space if you need some by making your songs smaller size, by smaller size will make them more handle-able to your oldie 3G.
  3. Disable the “Location Services” feature. Ok that’s not for the speed (mainly, it’s for battery reasons) but I assume turning off the GPS will free some additional ram.
  4. Lastly, but I won’t recommend, despite the newly legality of the Jailbroken devices! I used redsn0w to jailbreak my iPhone and I check only the “Multitasking” and “Battery percentage”, neither Cydia nor “Home Screen Wallpapers” (cause base on my tests, wallpapers seems to encumber the device!

Verdict: Spotlight “dissemblance” make some difference overall, but the noticeable difference was made by multitasking. Multitasking make your apps in a “pause mode” when you don’t use them by make them extremely fast to open. In the other hand those apps use ram to maintain their state. So as far as you have open some light apps like Mail, Messages, Phone etc. everything seems to be nice. The battery drain seems a problem but disabling the “Location Services” make a balance!

I’ll test this combination for the weekend and I’ll update you with the results!

Update: “After a weekend with this combination, I was pretty satisfied. Battery life pretty decent, and speed too. To be honest, I didn’t use the phone as usual (weekend was @ seaside), so the testing will be continued and I’ll update you shortly!

A.K.
